Flooding And Home Security: Avoiding Minor Disasters In Your Home

When people are worried about safeguarding their homes and apartments, they are usually picturing burglars casing the joint, sneaking in while no one is home, and making off with all of the valuables. While this is often a concern for homeowners and renters alike, there are other more insidious dangers lurking around homes and apartments across America, ones that cause a lot of damage and can also destroy lives, but that get swept under the rug.

The truth is that water damage can be every bit as devastating for a homeowner’s well-being as a robbery, because it, too, can suddenly take out a whole bunch of valuable items. And when it comes to renter’s insurance, so much of the time people forget that in their quest for home security
, they’ve neglected to insure their valuables against things like flooding. This is especially true places where huge rainfall isn’t really a factor. After all, if you’re living in the middle of New England, are you really that concerned about something flooding?

The fact is that you most likely should be. Flooding occurs all across the country, and is a major danger for home security. Because so often in winter, pipes tend to freeze, a great deal of the flooding damage in the country isn’t from heavy storms, but rather, from frozen pipes bursting. This can happen suddenly or overnight, leaving the area of the house where they burst a true disaster area. Likewise, other places in the country, like the southeast, where heavy rains often leads to immediate overflowing of things like swimming pools and subsequent flooding, damage can definitely hit properties, even if they don’t happen to have cellars or swimming pools.

Since flooding in your home can be a minor disaster and a major expense, it is best to consider protecting against it an integral part of your regular home security. The first step to take is towards a higher level of diligence. If you have a part of your house that is particularly prone to flooding, consider keeping things like expensive electronics or heirlooms far away, on the second floor. If your property is particularly old, also, it is a good idea to have a plumber check on the pipes before winter arrives. And during colder months, it is always the best to keep the water in all of the faucets around your home or apartment at a drip, so that the pipes do not freeze and burst.

In places where flooding does occur, home security involving water damage is a little bit different. If there are large, discolored spots on the ceiling and it appears as though the paint is starting to crack, you should get professional help immediately. That sort of water damage can cause a collapse in your ceiling, and should not be taken likely. Likewise, if you’re expecting water levels to rise and cause some trouble for your home, go ahead and pay attention to the weather reports so you can plan accordingly. This might mean lowering the level of water in your pool, or setting up some sandbags. Either one can cause a major difference between manageable damage and something more serious.
